Low-expansion foam and sealant in the gap around the frame, closing a path for drafts and energy loss.
The window itself may be tight and efficient, but the gap between the frame and the wall can leak plenty of air. Old windows were often packed with scrap fiberglass or nothing at all, and that gap is where drafts and cold spots start. Insulating and air sealing that gap is one of the most effective, least expensive steps in a window project. Homeowners in Nashville ask for it with replacement windows and also as a separate upgrade for existing windows.
When we install a replacement window, we fill the gap with low-expansion foam made for windows, which seals without pushing the frame out of shape. We also seal the exterior and interior edges with the right sealant. For existing windows, we remove trim where needed, insulate and reinstall it, or seal from the outside. We check for gaps, cracks and missing insulation and explain what we find so you can see where the air was getting in.
A quarter inch of space around a frame can leak as much air as an open crack, and it lets in dust and sound too.
Window foam fills gaps without bowing the frame, which keeps the sashes working smoothly.
Exterior sealant keeps water out, and interior seals stop air from moving through the wall cavity.
We can seal around windows you are keeping, often by removing the trim, insulating and reinstalling it.
