Remove the old window, frame and trim down to the opening, repair what is hidden and install a complete new window unit.
A full-frame replacement takes the window out of the wall completely, including the frame, the sill and the trim. That is more work than an insert, and it is the right choice when the frame is rotted, out of square or poorly insulated, or when you want to change the size or style of the opening. In Nashville, many older homes have frames that have quietly leaked for years, and the only way to see what is behind the trim is to open it up.
We remove the interior and exterior trim, take out the old unit and inspect the rough opening for rot, water damage and gaps. Damaged framing is repaired, a sill pan or flashing is added and the new window is set level and plumb, then insulated with low-expansion foam and sealed. We finish with new trim inside and out, or capping over existing trim. You get a window that is installed as a complete system rather than dropped into an old shell.
We take out the frame and trim so we can see the framing, the sheathing and any water damage that hides behind the old window.
Soft wood, gaps and crooked framing are corrected before the new window goes in, so the installation lasts.
Flashing directs water out, and foam and sealant close the gaps around the new frame.
Interior casing and exterior trim or capping are installed fresh for a clean, finished look.

When the frame is damaged or out of square, when you want a larger glass area or when you want the opening insulated and flashed properly.

We replace or cap the trim as part of the job, and we discuss styles and colors with you.
Often yes, within the limits of the wall and structure. We check the framing first.
